Your professional life is a unique part of your everyday interaction. Perhaps you make your own hours, work from home or are taking time off, but for those of us who interact with co-workers day in and day out, there are certain expectations that are upheld in order to decipher work from play. While specific acceptable practices may vary from job to job, here are the major faux pas you should avoid as an employee:
The Over-Sharer: Happy hour with your friends is a great place to talk about your latest date, family drama or contemplative life goals; the office is not. While you may not be told to tone down your personal narratives, it is best to leave the details of your life for those outside of the office.
The Gloater: Striving to do well in the workplace (and outside of it) is necessary. You cannot be too over-zealous to be successful at your craft - whatever it may be - but that doesn’t mean you have to let everyone know about how great you are. Keep the performance reviews, personal acknowledgements from above and closed deals relevant to the job, rather than to you. It is appropriate to share your success, but do so tactfully and sparingly.
The Slacker: While gloating can get you a seat in the break room alone, so can the other end of the spectrum. Rolling into the office late, leaving early or simply doing the bare minimum at your job is noticeable to your co-workers. If it’s hard to get you to help out with new projects or extra bits, you are likely missing opportunities to grow as an individual and as a respectable employee.
Instead of one of these three behaviors, it is best to balance being personable, hard-working and level-headed. The well-balanced employee knows how to draw boundaries without coming off as unapproachable or cold. He/she works hard and earns respect but does not have to let everyone know about it all the time.
